How to Create a Subdomain ?
In this post I am going to teach you how to create a subdomain for your domain through your cPanel. For those who do not know the difference between a domain and a subdomain, I am going to differentiate the two in a couple of lines.
The web address to your main/primary website is the domain of your website, a few examples of domains are www.sample.com and www.expample.com. Where as subdomains are part of a primary website examples of subdomains include blog.example.com and support.example.com.
Subdomains can server a number of purposes such as you could create a blog.yourdomain.com subdomain to add a blog section to your website if your website does not has a blog section already or you could create a forum.yourdomain.com subdomain to add a forum to your website.
You can do all the things with a subdomain that you can do with a domain. Below are a number of steps which will allow you to create a new subdomain.
1. Log in to your cPanel
First of all you are going to need the details to your cPanel. If you don’t know them or have forgotten them contact your web hosting. They will also provide you with the link to access the cPanel for your website. Your cPanel page should look like this
Just insert your username and password provided by your web hosting company and log in to your cPanel.
2. Find the Subdomain Section
Once you are logged in to your cPanel you are going to need to find the domain section where you will also see a link to the subdomain section. Click on it and you will be taken to the page where you can create a new subdomain. Here is a screen shot of what you are looking for in your cPanel.
If you don’t see one contact your hosting provider and make sure that subdomains are included in your hosting package. My hosting package comes with an unlimited number of subdomains.
3. Create Your New Subdomain
You will see a page similar to the one below. You page might look a little different as this varies from company to company. Each web hosting company makes a few minor adjustments to the theme of the cPanel to match the theme of their company.
Write the name of the new subdomain you want to create on your website in the Subdomain text box. I am going to create a new subdomain name sample. Once you fill the subdomain text box the Document Root text box should automatically get filled. Click on the create button to create the new subdomain.
If Document Root text box does not gets filled automatically contact the support of your hosting company and ask them for the instructions to fill the text box. Inputting an invalid value could affect the content of your primary domain.
4. Done !
Once you click on the create button and if everything works fine you will see a success message on your screen.
Now go to your newly created subdomain and make sure it is working. It can take up to 24 hours for the new subdomain to start working.
You can do what ever you want with your new subdomain. In my next tutorial I am going to be installing WordPress using Softaculous, the one click script installer, on this subdomain. In the mean time take a look at how to install WordPress manually.
